Orientation And Ethical Practice

I apply standards and considerations from the ACA Code of Ethics to my decision making processes and interactions with all clients. One of the best qualities about the Chicago School of Professional Psychology is its attention to inclusion of ethics standards in each class. I was challenged to consider ethical dilemmas not just in my ethics class but in every class presentation. For instance, I discussed the ethical implication of my research study proposal in my research class, my worldview and personal demographics potentially impacting counseling in my multicultural class, and professional conduct standards when treating those with trauma in my trauma class. After each case conceptualization in substance use class and family counseling class, I reflect on ethical considerations which affect my client and my approach to counseling each particular client. In my Internship class, I had to develop an advocacy plan for one of my clients to address institutional and social barriers that impede mental health progress. I not only learned the role of a professional counselor’s duty to advocate on behalf of the profession but the process of such advocacy as applied to a client’s need for systems advocacy.

I have seen the value of theoretical application of ethics in class as it has translated to my professional conduct in my internship. When reviewing a case with my supervisor, I can see the decision making models shape my approach toward conceptualization. I address issues of confidentiality with clarity and age-appropriate language. I have seen my ability to navigate confidentiality issues evolve over the last year as telemental health counseling is becoming increasingly common. I have an understanding of HIPAA regulations which guide my conduct using software in this unprecedented explosion of remote counseling while maintaining client protection. I have also seen an increase in my confidence and competence with defining and enforcing boundaries with clients, ethical bracketing to avoid imposing my perceptions of normative behavior, and above all, to respect the dignity and promote the welfare of clients. I feel prepared by both my classes as well as my internship experience to effectively handle a wide range of ethical considerations.

The artifact attached is an ethical decision making model as it applies to receiving a gift from a client. It outlines the steps I would utilize while facing a dilemma with a client.
